Pacman ….. Is His Loss A Sign For Retirement?

pacman loss

I have to share this very short but meaningful message of When In Manila’s Editor-In-Chief, Vince Golangco, about the defeat of Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao..

So sorry for Pacman’s loss but he still wins a lot of “money” though, and everyone is also admiring his attitude towards his defeat.

Long live Pacman!

Birthday Boy Boxer

Birthday Bash Ala Hollywood

Boxing champ and Sarangani Representative Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao celebrated his 33rd birthday with a major star-studded bash, Hollywood style with all the elements of showbiz glamor and kick.

The nearly 2,000 guests, among them celebrities, politicians, relatives and buddies in the trade, arrived in their best dresses and suits, packed the KCC Mall Convention Center, cheered on, and paid tribute to the legendary boxing icon tagged as the most famous Filipino.

Joy Isla, managing owner of Party Island refused to cite the cost of the event, but a Pacquiao family member claimed that about P5 million had been spent to orchestrate the event, excluding the car and P2 million that were raffled off for the guests.

83-year-old grandma, Cristina Dapigran, was given the chance to give her birthday message to the celebrant. After giving her greetings, Daprigan said in the vernacular: “I hope you will make good your promise to give me a house.” The boxer-turned-lawmaker responded with a big smile.

I hope the residents of Northern Mindanao, like Cagayan De oro and Iligan. could also request a new home from Pacquiao.

Dionisia, Pacquiao’s mom also appeared  and even sang two songs for her famous son. I think the songs were entitled “ Mo Money, No Problems” by Notorious B.I.G. and “Envy” by Nicki Minaj, and she dedicated it to the people of Northern Mindanao (joke).

Twas The Days Before Christmas

“Twas the days before Christmas, when all through the Lower House
All the Representatives were stirring, headed by Neil Tupas.
The impeachment was introduced by the Majority with dare,
In hopes that the Chief Justice would soon be out of their hair.

The Congressmen were nestled all quick with their pens,
While visions of pork barrel danced in their heads.
And the Senators in their judicial robes, and Pnoy’s happy clap,
Had just settled their brains for a long impeachment rap.”

Christmas is nearing. The big day is just around the corner, but still a lot of troubling events are happening within our country. Let us take a look at some of these, but a fair warning because you may not be pleased.

Another Boxing Champion

3.      Another Boxing Champion

Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria wins by a technical knockout just twenty-nine seconds into the eighth round versus Giovani Segura of Mexico at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City. Viloria retains his WBO flyweight title in the bout dubbed as Island Assault 3.

While Amir Khan feels he was robbed in his loss vs Peterson, Viloria proves he can be a pound for pound best in his TKO victory.

Viloria in a convincing win. All heart and with superior skills and power, but his stamina remains a suspect.

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao,  who was there watching the fight, congratulated Viloria for an impressive fight, to which Viloria quickly retorted back that Pacman was his true idol and inspiration.

Meanwhile in Cebu, Filipino featherweight champion Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista defeated Mexican Miguel Angel Mendoza in style, stopping the challenger in the sixth round of the main event of Pinoy Pride X at the Hoops. Congratulations to Boom Boom!

I think all other Filipino undercards of both boxing events won. Mabuhay ang Pinoy! :)

On a related news, It was reported that immediately after his fight with Viloria, Segura was brought to the Medical City hospital to get treatment for injuries sustained from the fight including a lump on his head. Segura suffered a huge and almost grotesque lump in the right temple from Viloria’s relentless left hooks. The Initial findings of the doctors were: fracture in the orbital floor. He is now on IV & pain medications.

Sadly, it is not surprising that head injury is so common in boxing. It is estimated that when a boxer gets a direct blow to the head it is like being hit by a 12 pound padded, wooden mallet travelling at 20 miles per hour!

Being hit on the head can cause fractures to the bone of the head and face and tissue damage in the brain. A blow can damage the surface of the brain, tear nerve networks, cause lesions, bleeding and sometimes produce large clots within the brain.

Professional boxers suffer from the cumulative effect of damage to the brain, often resulting in punch drunk’ syndrome.

Now you don’t really need the powers of the moon here to make a loony out of you. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons say that 90% of boxers sustain a brain injury. So we have to put a more watchful eye out for Pacquiao who is one of our country’s lawmakers, and be very cautious and worried if he does run for a higher office in the 2013 elections.

Huling Hirit/Final Notes:

Quotes:

“It’s hard to stay a champion but I’m determined to hold the title for a longer period of time. I’m now taking every fight seriously.” – Brian Viloria

“Boxing is wrong medically, since it not only kills some participants, it inflicts objectively proven chronic brain damage in as many as 80% of fighters who have had a substantial number of fights.” – Dr. George Lundberg

Paquiao Jumped Five Ranks To Lieutenant Colonel

Paquiao, formerly a Master Sergeant, jumped five ranks to Lieutenant Colonel

The Palace on Monday dismissed criticism from the former head of the National Defense College that its promotion of boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao to lieutenant colonel went against established rules requiring any officer to be promoted to be a college graduate.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Pacquiao was entitled to the rank like other elected officials.

“It was because of his position as a congressman [that]… he is entitled to the rank of lieutenant colonel,” he said, citing an Armed Forces circular awarding the same position to senators, provincial governors and mayors of cities.
